Follow a single piece of gear through its full life and the problem with the outdoor industry becomes very clear, very fast.

The raw materials for a mid-layer fleece start as petroleum. Crude oil becomes polymer pellets. Pellets become fiber. Fiber becomes fabric. Fabric gets cut, assembled, sewn, and finished in a factory where the labor conditions, chemical runoff, and energy source vary depending on who made it and when. The fleece gets packaged, shipped, warehoused, shipped again, displayed, purchased, and used.

All of that happened before a single trail was walked in it.

Most premium outdoor gear is built to last 15 to 20 years of regular use. Most of it is owned by one person for 3 to 5 years before it gets replaced. Usually for a reason that has nothing to do with the gear's functional life. An upgrade came out. The color got dated. The owner moved somewhere warmer.

The gear still works. It just stopped being used.

A $500 piece of outdoor gear that gets used for 3 years and then sits in a closet for 10 more has one of the worst environmental returns in consumer goods. The manufacturing impact already happened. The utility was never extracted.

This is where most gear disappears. Into a closet. Into a garage. Into a donation bin where it may or may not reach someone who can use it. Into an informal listing that requires photographing, shipping, answering questions, haggling, and hoping the buyer does not ghost.
